SELECTING A MOVIE
Which movie to show? Comedy, drama, action,
classic? It's up to you. You can show almost any movie
that is available on DVD.
Movies just released to DVD tend to be a huge
draw. Showing a brand-new release will be exciting. You will indirectly benefit from the marketing that
surrounds DVD releases. But old favorites can be popular,
too. Especially with parents who may feel nostalgic for
movies they enjoyed as kids.
Please note that some film studios, especially
Disney, have restrictions on the use of their films
outdoors. When considering showing a Disney film, please
consult us about their restrictions on screenings.
COPYRIGHT
LAW
Under the Federal
Copyright Act (Title 17, United State code, Public law 94-553, 90
Stat. 2541) any viewing or exhibition of a film/video in
a public space must have a ‘public performance license’.
Without obtaining a license, you and your organization will be
subject to fines up to $250,000 and / or imprisonment.
Licensing starts at $150 for events that do not charge
admission. Typically licensing fees are between $250-$450.
See Film Licensing section for more
information.
PRE-HOME RELEASE
TITLES
There is also the choice of showing some movies
that are "Pre-home release". Pre-home release
meaning that the movie has finished its run in the theaters, but
is not yet available on DVD from your local video store
retailer. These movies usually cost more to license,
but will be more appealing to a larger audience.
GATE ADMISSION
The pricing structure for movie licensing changes when the
organization decides to charge a gate admission. Typically the
licensing company will require a licensing fee or 50% of the
total gross revenue from gate sales, whichever is greater.
OBTAINING YOUR MOVIE
LICENSE
Once you select your movie title, we will assist you in contacting
the proper agency to obtain your license. You do
not pay Southern Outdoor Cinema for the license, but we help make
the process easier for you to acquire the film.
By respecting the copyright licensing laws, you
help support outdoor cinema entertainment for years to come.
